A Journey to Safe Motherhood: Poonam’s Story
Sumitra, an ASHA worker from Moginand, witnessed the challenges faced by women in remote villages like Neemwala. With no road access and limited healthcare facilities, pregnant women struggled, especially during the monsoon season. Poonam, a young mother-to-be, was one such case. From a low-income family, she was hesitant to discuss her pregnancy and unaware of the importance of antenatal care (ANC), proper nutrition, and regular check-ups.
Poonam’s diet lacked essential nutrients, and her family didn’t know that poor nutrition could affect both mother and baby. Through an awareness session by the Mamta Team, supported by Mankind Pharma, Sumitra visited Poonam’s home to explain the importance of pregnancy care and invited her to the Health & Wellness Centre (HWC) in Moginand. Initially hesitant, Poonam attended the centre for her first ANC check-up, where her health was monitored, and she received iron and calcium supplements. She was also counselled on nutrition and danger signs in pregnancy.
Over time, she gained confidence, attending regular check-ups and group sessions. With growing trust, Poonam opted for a hospital delivery and gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
Sumitra continued to guide her post-delivery, ensuring newborn care and breastfeeding. Poonam’s journey inspired her family and village, showing the importance of accessible healthcare and timely intervention.
